Three good reasons not to miss the early-bird payment system
On the morning of the event there is much to be done to get everyone to the start line at the appointed time – having payment done in advance is one task that can be done to speed up the process and minimise queues.
It also means you don’t have to handle money and can concentrate on enjoying the event.
Finally, it is cheaper if you register early – as it means the organisers can spread the workload.

Schools encouraged to use the event for an inter-house competition
With early-bird discounts and a special price for teams, why not think about teachers and students getting together to put in combined teacher-student teams and challenge the other houses in your school. Or maybe the science teachers would like to take on the ‘phys-ed’ teachers. You need four runners for a team.
There are also prizes for the schools who have the greatest number of participants.
Weerama – why we run the event at this time
The FunRun/walk is held at this time as part of the annual Wyndham Weerama Festival. Find out about what else is on at the festival
Get hi-tech about your running
If you are taking on the 8km or 15km run it is wise to pace yourself so you don’t run out of puff half way through the event. Calculate the time you should achieve certain distances along the course using the calculator at the Runner’s World website.

Footwear
If you are going to wear new(ish) shoes for the fun run you will want to break them in before the event. Try wearing an extra pair of socks to help cushioning of your feet if you are concerned about sore feet. If you are doing a lot of running seriously consider buying well-fitting shoes as your longevity in the sport of distance running/walking is largely dependent on good footwear.
What will the weather be like on the morning of the event
It is worth tracking the weather at the Bureau of Meteorology to see what conditions you are likely to encounter. Late March can produce blustery weather but it is generally mild temperatures and at 9.00 am at the start of the event, temperatures of around 17 degrees are normal – great conditions.
Start at three, aim for six
If you are new to regular exercise then start off slowly – try exercising three times each week for about half an hour, and then gradually build up to six days each week as you work out the routines that suit you. Don’t feel guilty if you don’t achieve your goal – just start again. You will be amazed at how with perseverance you get the hang of regular exercise and how easily you will achieve your goal in the FunRun/Walk – that’s why we have called it “Take The First Steps”

Ride Your Bike to the Fun Run
If you are keen on exercise, or you can’t get a ride to the Fun Run, then come on your bike with your back pack. The organisers will look after your bike and your backpack and you can collect your things at the end of the event. Who knows, this might be the start of your interest in triathlons where you have to do each of swimming, cycling and running.
What happens on the morning of the Fun Run
If this is your first fun run, here is what to expect. First there will be lots of people getting themselves organised. You have to register and get your ankle bracelet – hopefully you have paid on-line (or at one of registration venues) or you will have to pay your registration fee. Next you need to leave your gear with a friend or with the property marshals. Then you warm –up and at the starter’s advice you head off. Your time starts when you cross the timing mat so don’t worry if you are not near the front
There are water points along the way if you feel dehydrated.
At the end, wind down with some stretching exercises, check out the merchandise tents, and collect your showbag of ‘goodies’. Our hope is that you enjoy yourself as you do something good for your health, and help others through the Royal Childrens Hospital Appeal. Want to know more then go to the Frequently Asked Questions.
